Japanese treats: Hattendo, Hazukido, and Fuwa Fuwa

This family's love for sweets cannot be denied. Whether it is a celebration or a pick-me-upper for an exhausting week, we will not say no to treats.

This time around, we tried some Japanese delights.

HATTENDO

We got some cream buns from Hattendo at a mall kiosk. We got the classic Custard Cream bun, Chocolate Cream bun and the seasonal Houjicha. We warmed up the buns for about 10 seconds in the microwave before serving.

The buns were moist and soft, and the cream was light and not overly sweet. However, they were not something I can see myself craving every now and then. It is a nice snack (think dinner rolls with fancy filling) but pretty pricey at about $3-4 each.

HAZUKIDO

These were some of the best croissants we've ever had! While technically it is a Taiwanese-based chain using Japanese and French techniques, I felt it was great enough to share with you.

We got deluxe chocolate, strawberry, caramel pudding and the oh-so-delicious salted egg yolk croissants. Biting into the slightly crisp top into layers and layers of flakes to reveal the delicious filling was just divine! While they were all good, the family decided that salted egg yolk and strawberry will always fill our box for future orders. Next time, we will also try the savoury ones--butter garlic, cod roe and truffle crab which was not available at the time. Guess this takes our order to a dozen minimum now! My stomach is scrambling to reassure my wallet. At about $5 each croissant, it is a bit pricey but I would say totally worth the joy it brought us. However, there are also Danish toasts, croissant rolls, and mountain loaves to try! Decisions, decisions. This will be sure to challenge my selection skills!

We also got a drink as part of a promotion. The Blue Sparkling drink (which also comes in a yogurt format) was refreshing but really just a soda with blue syrup. I would recommend coffee with the croissants instead.

FUWA FUWA

We also tried the Fuwa Fuwa Japanese Souffle Pancake. We had to wait 30 minutes for our order but they were so worth it.

I was the most unoriginal of them all, ordering the Signature. The souffle pancakes were perfect, of course. Airy and delightful, it was like taking a bite out of clouds. The signature was just with whipped cream and berries.

Grandma got Nutella Banana, which was a notch above the Signature for me. Apart form the bananas and the Ferrero Rocher topping, there was a nice Nutella sauce to drizzle over the pancakes.

DD#1 got Blueberry Cheese which was the most impressive looking of them all! The souffle pancakes were smothered in blueberries and blueberry syrup, candied lemon slices and ice cream on the side!

The family favourites were a toss up between Hubby’s Tiramisu pancake (because I love anything Tiramisu and my vote weighs a lot :P) and DD#2’s Raspberry Chocolate Lava.

Hubby’s Tiramisu pancake was dusted with cocoa powder on cream and a side of chocolate coffee syrup to drizzle on top. This is what I will order next time!

DD#2’s Raspberry Chocolate Lava was everyone else’s favourite. It had fresh raspberries with raspberry sauce on top of whipped cream and a side of caramelized bananas. Inside there is a velvety smooth chocolate sauce that oozes out as you cut into the pancakes.  We were speechless as we savoured each bite.

We also got a couple of drinks—Mango Latte and Yuzu soda. While they were ok and refreshing, I would not visit Fuwa Fuwa just for the drinks. In fact, just regular coffee will do.

Highly recommend these Japanese Souffle Pancakes. We cannot wait to find another excuse to celebrate. Until next time.  Arigatou.
