Wanderlusting Mama’s tips: How we saved at Disney World

Here are some tips which saved us a few bucks in our Disney World trip. Now, these may not apply to your family, but wanted to share with you anyway:

1. We did not get the refillable souvenir mugs which cost about $17+ each. First, the mugs are only refillable in the resort and not in the parks where we were majority of the time. Second, it was just too hot, we only wanted water. Pop does not really quench our thirst so given the choice, we’d pick water over pop anyway. We had brought water bottles and we rinsed and refilled them in the food court. There were also water fountains and quick service places where you can refill your water bottles.

2. We did not get a dining plan. We actually brought over some snacks (you can bring snacks into the parks as long as these do not need to be heated) which lasted us the whole trip. We did buy popcorn and such in the parks but, in general, we ate our own snacks. For reference, each snack would cost about $5. We also shared adult meals with the kids and it was sufficient—again, for our family. Some meals we ordered more, depending on how hungry we were.  We also did some table service dining but mostly we had quick service meals. After all, we didn’t want to waste precious time lounging in restaurants. So quick service worked out really well for us.

3. We pre-bought stuff at the Disney store. We brought over some stuff we already got from the Disney stores in Toronto—we got some pins, autograph books (for character meet and greets), and shirts. So, we didn’t have to buy them in the parks (and in US dollars!).

4. We did not get the Memory Maker. I love taking photos and I would not have left my camera anyway. Also, I did not necessarily always want to look for the park photographer to take our photos. We were always on the go. For our group shots, we did request for help in taking our pictures. The park photos from Memory Maker ended up so few that it wouldn’t have justified spending almost $200 (less $30 if you buy in advance). I do have friends who do not like to take photos so, for them, the Memory Maker would be the solution.

5. We did not do the Park Hopper option. We only had 3 days in the parks so it would seem logical to get the Park Hopper on our base tickets. However, it ended up to be a great decision for us. We spent all day anyway at each park. We would not have had the energy to hop to another park in the middle of the day.  Also, I estimated, it would have just wasted about an hour to get to the gate, wait for transport, and then go to another park. Saved an additional of about $64 per ticket.

So that was how we did it with our water-loving family of 5--which included a grandma and 2 kids who did not eat a lot, and a mom who loved taking photos.

As we had only 3 days in Disney World, we had to choose either Animal Kingdom or Hollywood studios for our final day. The girls and I went over the attractions of each park and decided that we have seen enough animals and been to enough safaris to skip Animal Kingdom.

We arrived at Hollywood Studios upon opening and headed straight for Rock n Roller Coaster. After lining up for 15 or so minutes, we finally got to the front of the line. Then, the ride shut down, much to the disappointment of everyone who was set to go on this one for their first ride in Hollywood Studios. We wasted about an hour but got Fast Passes to come back when the ride was working. Guess we could still consider ourselves lucky as some folks were actually stuck in the coasters, with the harness still locked!

We went to the Great Movie Ride next. Wait time was not indicated so we figured it wouldn’t be so bad. Wrong again, it took us about 25 or so minutes to get on this ride which was in need of an update. And it took another 20 minutes for the actual ride. By the time it was over, we barely had time to get to Star Tours to redeem our fast pass. Of course, we had to get out in time for the Frozen parade so it made it quite difficult to make our way to the Echo Lake area. With only minutes to spare, we managed to get in. Good thing it was a cool 4D ride. Our morning was saved!

Then it was already time for lunch. Where did our morning go? We were getting quite disappointed with this park having been on only one ride so far, so we decided to have some decent lunch. We met up with some relatives who were also in the park and headed for the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater for lunch.  Like a 50’s drive-in, the tables were set up like you were inside vintage cars. A large movie screen was up ahead showing old, black and white sci-fi movies. It was a fun experience and the food not bad either!

We rested a bit after lunch and allowed our food to digest before we went to redeem our fast pass on the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. DD#1 had been waiting to get on this ride! And as soon as i get my heartbeat under control, I will let you know that it was such a fun ride! We rode an “elevator” and made our way up the hotel to be plunged into the darkness below--all the while with some scenes from The Twilight Zone. I was screaming the whole time and am not sharing our photo on this one! It also scared 7-yr-old DD#2 a bit but she was ok a few moments later.

And, as we were already back in the area, we redeemed the fast pass on the Rock n Roller Coaster. It was a blast—literally, as Aerosmith screamed through the speakers all throughout the ride. Ok, this one was definitely worth that fast pass!

By this time, there were only a couple of Indiana Jones shows that were left that afternoon. So, deciding to forego the Frozen show (as no one seemed keen to do a sing-a-long), we redeemed our fun Fast Passes for Toy Story Midway Mania, where I (ahem, ahem) beat the rest of the gang in getting the best score! Weeeee!

We also managed to check out the Voyage of the Little Mermaid while waiting for the next Indiana Jones show. It was a nice theatre show where the talented Ariel had a clear singing voice. On hindsight, though, we should have watched something else as this was pretty redundant with the Little Mermaid ride we took in Magic Kingdom.

We made our way back to the Indiana Jones location and got into the second to the last show. By then it was standing room only. Luckily, some folks squeezed in the benches and we managed to get seats, albeit not altogether. Hubby and I were super glad we had the girls watch the Indiana Jones series a few months back. Now, they were able to relate to the scenes and characters. It was a wonderful show!

Before calling it a day, we decided to check out one last ride/show and we went for MuppetVision 3D. The intro was quite long but the 3D show was entertaining.

 Again, we did not stay for the Fantasmic show as we were just exhausted. Maybe when we come back, we’ll plan our days later in the day to catch these shows and fireworks. We still think Hollywood Studios was a better choice for our family over Animal Kingdom. It was smaller than Magic Kingdom and Epcot, but worth seeing as well.

One great benefit to staying at the Disney Resorts is that you have access to Magic Hours (extra hours either in the morning or evening in selected parks). However, it is not daily. We took advantage of Magic Hours during our trip and, boy, were we thankful! We were at Magic Kingdom at 8am when the park opened to the public at 9. We managed to go on so many rides all before lunch!

We got our park tickets just a few days before our trip. So, we were not able to take advantage of early Fast Pass booking for Disney World Resort guests, which was available 60 days before the trip.  

As we could not get Fast Passes to Seven Dwarves Mine Train, that was where we headed first—apparently, this was also the strategy of everyone else! By the time we made our way to the Seven Dwarves ride, there was already a 20 minute wait time. Oh well. Still, it was not so bad a wait. There were things to keep the kids occupied along the way and the line moved quickly enough. The ride was awesome and was the only coaster ride Grandma took. It was a cool coaster, but needless to say, Grandma did not ride a coaster again the rest of the trip!

Another thing we were not able to book for Fast Pass, by choice as we could only pick 3, was the meet and greet the princesses at the Fairy Tale Hall. We saw that the wait time was only 25 minutes so we figured, what the heck, let’s check it out. The girls got to meet Elsa and Anna and we took tons of photos!

We went to Haunted Mansion next and then back tracked again to Fantasy Land to Peter Pan’s flight (fast pass) and It’s a Small World, a classic ride! We also managed to go to Under the Sea-Journey of the Little Mermaid. All of these before noon! Not bad, eh?

We went back to Liberty Square for quick service lunch at Colombia Harbor House. Good thing these areas were right beside each other as we kept going back and forth to get to the rides we wanted!

Then, it was off to Tomorrowland where DD#1 had her first ride-by-herself experience at Tomorrowland Speedway. She was finally tall enough to drive her own car. It was fun but the cars were not easy to maneuver. We rode the Astro Orbiter next-- in the rain! What were we thinking?! It rained every afternoon in our trip but just for 10-20 minutes. Of course it had to happen while we were about to ride the Astro Orbiter. We were quite wet but, thankfully, not soaked through.  It definitely provided some much needed relief from the heat and sun!

We rode Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin (laser shooting game) and Stitch’s Great Escape (surprisingly a nice 4D ride) before heading to Space Mountain. Space Mountain, hands down, was one of the best rides in Magic Kingdom.

By that time, it was time for the parade. We were back in Liberty Square by then, making our way through to Frontierland. We had a great view right by where the parade began. The girls enjoyed watching the characters in their fancy floats!

After the parade, we passed by Adventureland where the girls rode The Magic Carpets of Aladdin. Beware the camel which spits! After which, we headed to Frontierland where redeemed our Fast Pass for Splash Mountain. Another fun ride! We were not quite as wet as we were in the Astro Orbiter.

When we got out, we saw Big Thunder Mountain with a 30 minute wait. That wasn’t so bad, right? But the wait time posted was not accurate and we ended up waiting for 50 minutes! Can’t really say it was totally worth it. It was ok. Ride if you can, but it is something you can miss, in my opinion—especially if you are already going for Space and Splash Mountains. I think the Seven Dwarves Mine Train is much better than this one.

The girls got some fairy dust sprinkled on them by a Fairy Godmother over by Cinderella’s castle while we checked out the other stores. Window shopping was our excuse for getting some much needed airconditioning, away from the sticky air and scorching sun.

By this time we were quite tired and ready to head back to the resort. Obviously we could not muster enough energy to wait until 10pm for the fireworks. We just took our final photos and accepted we will not be able to ride the following: Jungle Cruise, Liberty Square Riverboat, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Mickey’s Philharmagic, and Monsters Inc. Oh, and Pirates of the Caribbean was closed for refurbishment, so we missed that one too. But it was all good. We rode what we could and especially those we really wanted. This was really one of the best parks!

The first park we went to was Epcot. Although we wanted to go to Magic Kingdom first, we scheduled Magic Kingdom for a day when there were extra Magic hours (available to folks staying in the resorts). Just seeing the Epcot sphere brought up the excitement level by 10 notches! We were at the gates about 30minutes before the park opened. As soon as it opened, we headed straight for Test Track, where we did not have Fast Passes booked. This one is a must! Design your own car and then test drive it (well, performance-wise).

Next we checked out The Seas with Nemo and Friends, Turtle Talk with Crush, and looked at the huge manatee in the exhibit upstairs. We also managed to see the Journey into Imagination with Figment before we left “the Seas” area.

We then headed to “the Land” area where we rode a boat to explore the greenhouses at the Living with the Land ride.

We also saw the Circle of Life movie (can be missed) before we grabbed lunch. We rested a bit before we used our Fast Pass for Soarin’. We all enjoyed gliding through the different US states!

After Soarin’ we checked out the different countries at the World Showcase. They showcased Canada, England, Morocco, Japan, Americas, Mexico, Africa, Paris, Italy, China, Germany, and Norway. The kids played the Phineas and Ferb adventure where they were given a smartphone to complete missions. They followed instructions on the phone and it allowed them to explore a country. Each mini-mission completed made something move in the area—like activate the waterfalls or make a robot come out. The girls played the mission in Japan only but if there were time and energy, they could have gone on every country. If you purchased a passport in one of the gift shops, the kids can also get this stamped at each country visited. Also, kids can collect stamps and create a personalized souvenir at the Kidcot fun stations at each country.

 Each of the countries featured a shopping area and dining area. We were not too hungry after having just eaten lunch so we did not get to try out all the goodies featured. We did have some Bratwurst, sauerkraut and apple streudel in Germany for dinner.

We met Mary Poppins at England and then Aurora in Paris. The girls got their autograph books signed and got a lot of photos. Character meet and greet, check!

Another fun thing which the girls got into was getting some pressed penny souvenirs. We went on a quest to check out each machine we could find to see if there was anything interesting. A practice in discipline, the girls knew they had to choose well as I told them they could only get two each.

We headed back to the Future World to get the last of our Fast Passes: Mission Space and Spaceship Earth. What we didn’t get to do was explore each country in depth except for a few or watch fireworks. We also forgot to pass by Cool Club where you can sample pop from all over the world—for free! I know, I know, we missed quite a few. However, at the onset, we had already kept in mind that we will not be able to do or see everything. As long as we hit the popular rides and then some, we were good.

Downtown Disney in Orlando is much bigger than the one in California. They do pretty much have the same staple stores (Wonderful World of Disney which had a branch of the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and Lego) and restaurants, such as Rainforest Café. We wanted to try T-Rex but the wait time was 90 minutes so we ended up in the Rainforest Café Lava Lounge where we sat outside (instead of inside where they had the airconditioning we wanted).

DD#1 went nuts looking at all the sweets at Goofy Candy Co. and we enjoyed browsing Christmas stuff at the Days of Christmas store. The girls also had fun doing their pin trading at the marketplace. We had ice cream at Ghirardelli and checked out the goodies at the Marketplace Fun Finds.

As the sun set, the area became more and more vibrant. There was a dance party at the Waterside Stage and the bars started getting packed. Since we had been up from 430am that day, we decided it was time to head back to the resort. With little sleep and with kids in tow, we really did not have the energy to revel in this street party. We had to get ready for back to back days in the theme parks so we skipped on the Cirque show and passed on many other stores .

We did manage to catch a live performance at the Raglan Road Patio stage where we saw a fun rendition of Pharrell’s Happy in violin! But that was about all we could take for the day. We caught the boat back to Port Orleans Riverside and called it a night. The trip to Downtown Disney definitely set the mood for the fun days ahead.

We planned for our WDW vacation for months and decided to stay in Port Orleans Riverside Resort as it was one of the few resorts which can sleep 5 in a room. WDW has several tiers of resorts ranging from value to deluxe. They also have campgrounds. The value resorts would have roomed our party of 5 in a suite which would end up costing more than our chosen moderate resort. We also chose Port Orleans Riverside over Caribbean Beach Resort as it had water transportation as well as the bus.

We arrived in Orlando on a hot and humid July morning and the Disney Magical Express shuttle took us to our hotel. The special luggage tags were mailed weeks before and got our checked in luggage straight to the room—we didn’t even have to worry about it!

The Disney Port Orleans Riverside resort was just awesome—a wonderful resort which made you feel like you were in Louisiana! There were two sections of rooms—Magnolia Bend and Alligator Bayou. The Magnolia Bend area was just beautiful with its colonial style mansions, but only in Alligator Bayou did they have the rooms which could sleep all of us. If you are willing to pay extra, they have themed rooms just like in the other Disney resorts. In Port Orleans Riverside, the themed rooms were of the Princess and the Frog.

The kids enjoyed swimming in the pools and they even had a daily party at the main pool, Ol’ Man Island. We only got to check out 3 out of the 5 pools in the resort. Apart from swimming, there were tons of activities within the resort—you can go fishing, biking, and ride on horse-drawn carriages. In the evenings, there were bonfires and movies. You can’t get bored in this place!

For meals, you can get pizza delivered to your room, lounge in Muddy Rivers pool bar, have a table service dinner at Boatwright’s Dining Hall, or just do quick service meals (like what we did the whole time here) at the Riverside Mill food court.

From this resort, you can access the water taxi to get to Downtown Disney or take the bus to the parks. Service was superb and we felt that the cast members really went out of their way to make our vacation enjoyable! Would not hesitate to go here again!

The Magic continues at Downtown Disney California

When you're alone and life is making you lonely, you can always go…to Downtown Disney. Okay, I am not Petula and that was not my era, but I will say that the lyrics are pretty apt. After all, Disney is the happiest place on earth!  Anyway, since we were exhausted from our full day trip to Disneyland, we had to check out Downtown Disney another time.

After an early dinner, we went to Downtown Disney just a few days before New Year’s. This time, we didn’t have to spend so much time looking for parking and having to ride a shuttle. The parking area was close to the district.

We went to all the wonderful stores like the big Build-a-Bear workshop, Disney Vault 28 with nice vintage Disney items, my favorite Anne Geddes store and many others. The kids greatly enjoyed the Lego Imagination center and we posed beside the life-sized Lego Darth Vader. Cool! There were also other kiosks around which had nice merchandise.

 The main attraction for us was the World of Disney. It was HUGE! I would say it is about 20 times the size of a regular Disney store. The girls and I were giddy looking at all the stuff and even hubby wanted to go shopping. Now that’s a feat! No other Disney store (at least to date) will now compare to this. There was a section for pretty much every Disney character (at least the famous and current ones). At that time, Alice in Wonderland was the current Disney release so there was a section dedicated to tea—as in Mad Hatter’s tea. There was a section for apparel, for head gear, for toys and even time pieces. You can actually spend hours inside this store. DD#2 managed to lose her hat in the store and that added another 30 minutes to our jaunt. We managed to find it at one of the lost and found counters after a bit of searching.

After getting a few items (including the lost hat), we then caught the fireworks display. Of course it was not as grand as it would have been inside the park, but it had to do. As it was DD#1’s first time to see fireworks, I would say that there is a slight chance she will remember this. She has slept through all the other fireworks display since. Downtown Disney is a destination I would recommend. Indeed, the lights are much brighter there, we can forget all our troubles, forget all our cares…

A Magical Place called Disneyland

My mom insisted on taking her grandchild, DD #1 to Disneyland when she was not quite two years old. We said she wouldn’t remember a thing (and she doesn’t), but we couldn’t take away a grandmother’s joy at seeing her granddaughter have fun, even if the moment is fleeting.

DD #1’s second trip to Disneyland was when she was 4 and DD #2 was about 21 months. That trip DD#1 now remembers. We went to Disneyland days before Christmas. School wasn’t out yet but there were a lot of people already at the park. We got there at about 10am with pre-purchased tickets. Getting into the actual park took some time though, because we had to find parking and then take a shuttle. We also had to make sure that the stroller and our bags were complete with all the essentials that we would need to last us until the evening.

The first ride we took at the park was the “Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage” ride. Lines were still okay at that time, and by ok I mean, about 15 minutes. We went inside a “submarine” and watched the story of Nemo unfold through the portholes. Nice!

By the time we finished with the ride, it was almost lunch time.  To avoid the crowds, we decided to go ahead and eat already. We brought some jarred food for DD #2 and the rest of us had burgers and nuggets from the concession stand. While eating, there was a Star Wars show going on, which kept us entertained through our meal.

Then, we took the boat ride on “It’s a small world.” I had gone on this ride a couple of times in the past. It didn’t fail to bring happy feelings as the wonderful dolls serenaded us. Of course, this one had a Christmas theme which made it a bit more festive.

Not surprisingly, Mickey’s Toontown was a real hit with the kids. First, we checked out Chip n Dale’s treehouse and Donald’s boat. Then we went to each of Mickey’s and Minnie’s house. We had nice family photos taken with Mickey and Minnie. Minnie was in her Christmas garb.  Afterwards, DD#2 and I enjoyed the Roger Rabbit Car Toon Spin and the Go coaster, while hubby and DD#1 sat these rides out.

Next, Grandma spent some quality time with DD#2 at the Mad Tea party teacup ride while hubby, DD#2 and I lined up for the other rides in Fantasyland. We pretty much covered this place well. We went to Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, Peter Pan’s Flight, Pinocchio’s Daring Journey, and Snow White’s Scary Adventures. Some of the rides were a bit scary for DD#2. The Snow White ride, in particular, had some creepy shockers where even we, the adults, were surprised! But well, with a ride called, Scary adventures, we should’ve expected that. Peter Pan’s flight was a fun ride and the magical, starlit sky at the end of the ride was awesome. Of course, we did not pass up the chance to ride on King Arthur’s carousel.

We then decided to see the princesses. While DD#2 took a nap, I lined up for almost two hours just so DD#1 could meet some princesses! I hope one day she remembers the lengths I go through to make her happy. Sigh. Prior to this trip, we got an autographed picture of Cinderella and DD#1 was quite excited to see the princesses in person. They don’t guarantee you, however, as to which three princesses will be there when you finally get to the front of the line. Tired but happy, we finally got to meet Belle, Arielle, and Jasmine. DD#1 had photos taken with each of them. We were given a card which had a barcode linked to our photos. These photos we could later on pick up at one of the gift shops (at tourist prices, of course) or could be shared and/or purchased online as well. DD#1 was so ecstatic that she no longer felt tired. I, however,  was tired but mustered the energy any wanderlusting mama should have.

We walked through Sleeping Beauty’s castle and browsed for souvenirs at the Bibbidi Bobbidi boutique. The merchandise was so cute, I would not be surprised if one racked up a huge shopping bill…I mentioned that we browsed, right? We skipped the Indiana Jones and Jungle Cruise rides at Adventureland as well as the rides at Critter country. We did buy the Mickey caps for the girls at the Briar patch store where they had a huge selection of Mickey caps. The girls chose a pink Mickey cap with a tiara and we got them embroidered with their names. It was a nice souvenir for this trip. I wanted to get one of those pirate Mickey caps but I managed to avoid the temptation.

With Grandma watching the girls, hubby and I managed a few rides of our own. We went on the Pirates of the Carribbean (over an hour’s wait!) and the Haunted Mansion rides. These were good, fun rides.

By this time, we decided to get some gumbo dinner at the New Orleans Square. Nothing really spectacular, but we had expected meals to be non-descript. We had to eat—and eat fast—so we could do more! After all, we didn’t go to Disneyland for dining.

We then waited at Main St. for the Christmas parade. Hubby had DD#1 on his shoulders while I had DD#2 on mine. The parade was wonderful. The girls finally saw Cinderella (the princess that DD#1 did not get to meet earlier) and Prince Charming. Toy Story characters were there too! At the end of it though, my shoulders and back ached so much, it felt like the Seven Dwarfs stomped on me-- while carrying a barrel of jewels! That was my sign that we had to head home. We had planned to return after a couple of days to check out Downtown Disney and catch the fireworks, albeit not from the New Orleans area.

My mom was right, as mothers always are ;) The girls may or may not remember this trip, but we do. The trip might not be known as “our trip to Disneyland” but more likely “the day we took the kids to Disneyland.”  And by now there are newer rides that the girls will love to go on. But there always is a next time. Next time, we hope to check out Disney World and go on another magical journey to yet another one of the happiest places on earth.
